Faux French Tourism Friday and Saturday June 12 and 13, we're swingin' with Smokey Robinson and Dave Brubeck (on paper, anyway) at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival in Rochester N.Y. We'll play two sets Friday evening, at 7:15 and 9:15 on the Jazz Street stage, and we return to the same venue Saturday evening for a 6pm set. Friday June 26 we're at the Oxford Wine and Art Festival in Oxford, Ohio (can't guarantee that Smokey will be joining us there). We'll be back in Cincy at the Hyde Park Blast the following afternoon, Saturday the 27th from noon to 3pm. More on our "gigs" page! ● Tink's Mondays We're in our seventh year of Monday residency at Tink's Cafe in Clifton at 3410 Telford Avenue, near Graeter's and the Esquire Theatre. Hear us weekly from 6:30-9pm. Great food, Gypsamerican jazz, rarely an authentic Frenchman or gypsy within miles, and you never know when Lee Konitz, Mayor Mallory, Joe Lukasik, Kathleen Sebelius, Melodica Virtuoso Steve Schmidt, or self-espoused harmonica legend Jim Tarbell will pop in. Dig Tink's menu at www.tinkscafe.com. Our Psychedelic Psyster Troubadour Dali is at Tink's every Thursday, 6:30-9pm, featuring Frenchies Don Aren and Brian Lovely and ever-immaculately chapeaued vocaliste Annette Shepherd. Reservations at (513) 961-6500 ● WoodSongs Our January appearance on Michael Johnathon's "Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour" with the Katie Penn Band is now airing on public television stations across the country. As they say in showbiz, "check your local listings." Or, at least, I've heard them say that. Or, you can watch the show right now online at: http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp Ours is Woodsongs show number 513. Woodsongs is heard on nearly 500 radio stations worldwide and is telecast across the U.S. on public television stations. ● Reveling in Oblivion Our latest CD, Oblivion, received a Cincinnati Entertainment Awards nomination in the "Album of the Year" category. Seven of Oblivion's eleven tracks are original Frenchmen compositions. Oblivion is available for online purchase or download at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/fauxfrenchmen2 Here's a CityBeat mini-review: Critic’s Pick. “Pop genius Brian Lovely, roots maven George Cunningham, preeminent Jazz bassist Don Aren and peerless CSO violinist Paul Patterson all pretty much abandon everything they do regularly to make a gorgeous Gypsy Jazz noise here with the Faux Frenchmen. The quartet swings like crazy, mixing Django Reinhardt Jazz classicism with Raymond Scott whimsy to create a sound that can only be described as serious fun. The band's second CD, Oblivion, is another mix of pop and jazz standards plus some excellent originals." (BB) City Beat 9/08
Our first CD features the eclectic mix of 30's jazz, pop gems, and cartoon music our fans and friends know from our live performances. Available online at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/fauxfrenchmen Both of our CD releases are available in Cincinnati area stores including Shake It Records in Northside, Everybody's Records in Pleasant Ridge, Joseph Beth Booksellers, Borders Tri-County, Barnes & Noble stores at Kenwood, Newport on the Levee and West Chester, and at Tink's Cafe in Clifton and all of our live shows. Thanks to Greg Hauser for his persistence, dedication, and unparalleled tire maintenance. ●
Me and Paul and Our My Space At our Patterson-pimped Myspace site you can hear our music, gawk at Michael Wilson Faux-toes, read George's blog, and ponder why so many people spend so much time on their computers. ● CEA Award After seeing our previous three Cincinnati Entertainment Award nominations go down in flames to the likes of Cat City and the Blue Wisp Big Band, we've finally garnered a CEA in the "best jazz" category. Apparently there are no CEA "three strikes" laws currently on the books ..... "Oblivion" also received a nomination in the "Album of the Year" category. Thanks to our friends and fans for voting. ● The Guys (and Girls) Get Shirts Cathryn Lovely's cover design from our first CD (she also designed our "Oblivion" cover) is now available on a swellegant t-shirt, in men's and women's styles and sizes in black or white. Available at all Frenchmen shows, whether you're a member of Paul Anka's band or not. |
